Canberra is the capital city of Australia, located in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Before European settlement, the region of Canberra was home to several Indigenous groups, including the Ngunnawal, Ngambri, Walgalu, Wiradjuri, Ngarigo, and Yuin people.

Early European Settlement

The first Europeans to arrive in the Canberra region were explorers, including Charles Throsby and Joseph Wild, who arrived in the early 1800s. However, it was not until 1824 that a European settlement was established in the region, led by Joshua John Moore. The settlement, known as Canberry, was established as a base for the exploration of the surrounding area and for the grazing of livestock.

Gold Rush and Growth

In the 1850s, the discovery of gold in nearby regions led to a surge in population growth in the area. This growth continued through the 1870s, as the discovery of silver in the nearby town of Yass led to the establishment of a thriving mining industry.

In 1901, Canberra became the capital city of the newly federated Australia. The city was chosen because it was located between the two largest cities in Australia, Sydney and Melbourne, and it was seen as a neutral location for the federal capital. The city was named after the Indigenous word for "meeting place".

The city was home to several important military facilities, including the Royal Australian Air Force's Central Flying School and the Australian Army's Royal Military College.
