Canberra, the capital of Australia, which is also the country's largest inland city, is located at the northern end of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and south-west of Sydney. The residents, known as Canberrans, have a population of over 345,000.

As the seat of the government of Australia, Canberra is the perfect place to visit to learn more about the country. Situated in the city is the Parliament House, the High Court and numerous government departments and agencies. It is also the location of many social and cultural institutions of national significance, such as the Australian War Memorial, Australian National University, Australian Institute of Sport, National Gallery, National Museum and the National Library. The Australian Army's officer corps are trained at the Royal Military College, Duntroon and the Australian Defence Force Academy is also located in the capital.

Fun and colorful festivities are also a must see in Canberra. Every year, in February, The Canberra Show is being held. It features shows, amusement park rides and agricultural competitions. For flower enthusiasts, the months of September and October should not be missed. The festival of flowers, known as Floriade, is a yearly festival held in spring. Colorful flowers and floral displays, with tulips as the main attraction, are made even livelier by local performers creating wonderful music. Great Photo opportunities await as the Gnome and Scarecrow Festival showcase the artistic talents of the children.

For those seeking adventure away from the museums and city attractions for a while, the Australian Capital Territory has a large area of national park with lots of walking tracks, mountain bike trails and rock climbing opportunities, all surrounded by a scenic view. There are also lots of fun water activities to do such as hiring a paddle boat, canoe or kayak and mess around Lake Burley Griffin. Alternatively, a scenic, leisurely cruise is also available for those less adventurous.

Canberra is not only the perfect destination to brush up on Australia's history, but also for an action packed adventure at the Australian Capital Territory's great outdoors.
